FOLKS, I think it is TIME for veterans and others who know what the true meaning of the 'SILVER STAR' award is to stand up and explain to well-intentioned but misinformed politicos and wannabe types that this "Silver Star Service Banner"
program that they so freely share information about is 'bogus' in that the recipients that gather in assorted community selections are NOT necessarily holders of the 3rd highest award for valor in defense of our nation. Rather they have independently presented themselves as having been somehow injured (or didn't feel good) while in military service... not necessarily even Purple Heart category!
IT IS SMOKE AND MIRRORS. \
They fill out a form and someone pays for a certificate and a window banner that resembles the banners hanging in homes of veterans' families with
family member serving (BLUE STAR) OR
family members deceased (KIA)(GOLD STAR)
Rather it is a local Missouri guy who sells the accessories enabling presentations to be made all over the landscape to veterans who served somewhere, sometime and suffered some bona fide or imagined injury - there is no verification and documentation.
The term "SILVER STAR" is being hijacked in a program that:
enables a guy in Missouri to make some money; AND
enables / ensnares locally or state or regionally elected public officials to have a photo op while presiding or participating IN A CEREMONY.
WANT TO BE INFORMED ABOUT THE SILVER STAR MEDAL... take a look at this URL.
With the absence of a Silver Star Society to protects bearers of the recognition, unlike the Military Order of the Purple Heart or the Medal of Honor Society (?), this organization has set itself up to appear related to the 3rd highest award for valor, but they do offer the "fine print" on their website.
JUST READ THE DISCLAIMER buried in the website of the Missouri guy:

ACTION: Do we inform our local elected folks to STEER CLEAR to avoid embarrassment?
OR bury our "heads in the sand" and let the scoundrels and uninformed PREVAIL???
This is the NEWTON Family business in Missouri... to be fair, Principal Steve Newton is an Honorably Discharged Veteran of the USMC, 4th Marine Division, activated during Desert Storm.
He spent his career in law enforcement. It is my personal opinion that this program facilitates (to a degree) "stolen valor" from those in our veterans' ranks from generations who earned THE SILVER STAR.
Regards - Yours in veterans' service, Brian [letter and Form]
